HelloFresh Review

HelloFresh Review

We finally tried HelloFresh this week and here is a low down and review of how it works and our honest thoughts on the quality and service.

How it works

Sign up to choose between 3-5 dinners a week. You can choose boxes for 2-4 people. Ingredients required to make your meals are delivered on Wednesdays and you select the the meals you want to make by the Tuesday before the delivery. You can pause and cancel at any time but make sure you cancel before the Tuesday deadline to avoid another unnecessary week.

The food is delivered in a box. inside the box are paper bags, each paper bag contain ingredients for a specific meal that you’ve chosen. The portion of ingredient is exactly the amount you need. Included are recipe card providing you a summary of the nutritional content and the instructions to make your meal.

You can choose your meal settings so that you’re getting meals that can be cooked within 20 minutes or meals that tend to take more around 40 minutes.

Price

It will normally cost 4.20 per person per meal. However the first box is usally 50% off with the next 2 20% off.

There are some more pricy meals that you can opt for an you can pay a small additional price for the more expensive ingredients.

Our Thoughts

The quality of the food was generally good and we were really impressed with the recipes. The best thing we thought about getting HelloFresh was that the meals were a nice variation to the standard meals we were used to cooking and getting a little bit bored of under lockdown, and not being able to go to restaurants.

The instructions are pretty easy to follow and because the portions are just right you don’t have to measure or only have half of something leaving it to potentially rot in your frige if you don’t plan your meals carefully enough! I described this as cooking by numbers.

Things that could be improved i think is that the fruit and veg content of the dinner tends to be quite low, only 1-1.5 of your 5 a day, in the meals we’ve had all week. Typically we’d get 2 of our portions in a dinner.

I also have a sneaking feeling why some meals do taste shop bought, are some of the sachet sauces that come with it, so think these are bit of a cheat, not too far off cooking curry from a jar type thing. Apart from a few of these sauce sachets msot of the meal is constructed from unprocessed ingredients.

The normal full price of £4.2/person/dinner is probably quite expensive. We’ve been spending £100/week on a weeks worth of food shopping, but this includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks, toiletries and alcohol.

Conclusion

It’s definitely a viable and easy option when we’re running a little bit out of ideas as to what to cook that week and feel like a bit of change. It’s also probably a little too pricey to do all the time, but definitely worth doing since we’re not really eat out at restaurants and takeaways as much these days. Does feel like a nice treat to get especially under lock down :)

It was also a simple website to use and it was easy to cancel and looks east to rejoin. All in all, pretty kosher.
